Raid in Bhubaneswar
In a dramatic turn of events, a Chief Engineer in Odisha attempted to dispose of illicit cash by throwing bundles of ₹500 notes out of his apartment window during a Vigilance Department Raid in Bhubaneswar. The incident took place in Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, and has since shocked residents and authorities alike.
Chaos at Bhubaneswar Apartment
The scene unfolded when a vigilance team arrived at an apartment complex in Bhubaneswar to conduct a raid at the residence of Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, a Chief Engineer in the state’s Rural Development Department. As soon as Sarangi realized that a raid was underway, he allegedly began tossing stacks of ₹500 currency notes out of his window in a hurried attempt to get rid of the evidence.
Residents in the area witnessed what can only be described as a “cash shower,” as bundles of currency landed outside the apartment building. The dramatic attempt to escape legal consequences failed, however, as the vigilance team, aided by alert neighbours, was able to recover the discarded cash.
Over ₹2 Crore in Unaccounted Cash Seized
The vigilance team seized more than ₹2 crore in unaccounted cash from Sarangi’s properties. Preliminary reports suggest that ₹1.1 crore was recovered from his house in Angul, while ₹1 crore was seized from his flat in Bhubaneswar. The operation is part of an ongoing investigation into corruption and possession of assets disproportionate to known sources of income.
Multiple Locations Raided in accordance with Raid in Bhubaneswar
Authorities conducted simultaneous raids at seven different locations connected to Sarangi. These included:
- A two-storey residential house in Kardagadia, Angul

- Another flat in Puri
- A relative’s house in Shikhakapada, Angul
- Sarangi’s ancestral home in Angul
- A two-storey ancestral building in Angul
- His official office
The widespread raids were a result of specific intelligence gathered by the Vigilance Department regarding Sarangi’s allegedly ill-gotten wealth.

The entire operation has drawn attention not only because of the large amount of cash recovered but also due to the unusual and dramatic attempt by the accused to discard the money.
Investigation Ongoing
